This goal recognizes that eradicating poverty worldwide can only be achieved through a global partnership between rich and poor countries.

1. Reduce tariffs and debt for Least Developed Countries and Heavily Indebted Poor Countries
2. Increase aid to Least Developed Countries
3. Increase jobs for youth
4. Increase access to affordable drugs

Facts and Stats |
The UN estimates that unfair trade rules deny poor countries $700 billion every year
In 1970, 22 of the world’s richest countries pledged to spend 0.7% of their national income on aid. Thirty-four years later only 5 countries have kept that promise, Canada is NOT one of them. |

Progress so far |
The 5 rich countries who have achieved the 0.7% goal are: Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark and Luxembourg
147 countries of the World Trade Organization recently agreed, for the first time, on a new framework that promises to end all forms of agricultural export funding |

Canada’s Contribution |
Canada pledges to increase development assistance by 0.8% in order to double its total aid between 2001 and 2010 and in 2001 Canada announced duty-free and quota-free access to virtually all imports from the 48 least developed countries.

How you can take action |
Develop an awareness campaign or club at your school or within your community.
Write a petition for your local MP and get signatures to remind him or her about Canada’s new promise to increase development assistance by 0.8%.
Gather your friends and create a presentation about the importance of this goal and take it to different schools or community groups in your city or town. |
