2. Achieve Universal Primary Education

What is it?


Primary education is usually between kindergarten and grade 8, but it depends on each country’s school system. Normally, children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old are eligible for primary education.

What are the targets?


Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling

Facts and Stats


115 Million children do not attend primary school, 3/5 of them are girls

872 Million adults in the developing world don’t know how to read and write

Universal primary education would prevent 700,000 cases of HIV each year

As many as 150 million children in developing countries drop out of school before completing Grade 5.

Progress so far


The world is making steady progress. Regions like East Asia and the Pacific; Europe and Central Asia; and Latin America and the Caribbean are on course to meet the goal by 2015.

Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Oceania are still short of meeting the goal

Canada’s Contribution

  • Canada’s priority is to improve the quality of and access to basic education in it’s partner countries:Canada spent $858 million on education
  • Investments have helped 6 million more children attend school in Africa
  • Tanzania is close to achieving equal enrolment rates for girls
  • In Bangladesh a local Ngo provides specially designed basic education to more than 1.3 million children, allowing them to transfer to a government system afterwards.
