Goal 1

1. End Extreme Poverty and Hunger

What is it?

The United Nations defines poverty in two ways:

Absolute poverty is severe depravation, hunger, early death, and suffering. Absolute poverty is used to measure poverty statistics in Least Developed Countries like Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Relative poverty is the measurement of resources and living conditions in on area of a population compared to other areas of a population. Relative poverty is used to measure poverty statistics in highly industrialized and developed countries such as the U.S., Canada and Australia.

What are the targets?

1. Reduce by half the number of people living on less than a dollar a day

2. Reduce by half the number of people who suffer from hunger

Facts and Stats

  • One child dies every 3 seconds from hunger and related causes
  • 200 million children under 5 years old are underweight
  • At the start of 2005, nearly ONE MILLION Canadian children were living in poverty
  • Vitamin deficiencies are among the leading causes of death in developing countries; by preventing Vitamin A deficiencies 225,000 children can be saved each year
  • One billion people survive on less than $1 a day

Progress so far

Although some progress has been made, the situation in many countries has gotten worse. Most of Asia and North Africa are on track, but there is little or no progress in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The level of poverty in Western Asia has actually increased.

Canada’s Contribution

From 2000 to 2005 Canada contributed $681.1 million to fight hunger in least developed countries like Mozambique.
